Your secret weapon 🚀 for negotiation success seldom shows up in deal plans. But it should! The one thing you can count on in almost every negotiation is for the other party to make a proposal. Since you know they plan proposals, you can plan your response. 🤗

Negotiation Styles: Different Responses

When making these choices, start with your choice of negotiation style. If you are negotiating in a competitive style, you're going to reject every proposal except maybe even the one you eventually accept. 🤝 You might do this with a verbal rejection, "You must be kidding!" Or you can reject with a nonverbal or audible sound (like a mechanic sadly whistling while looking at your engine). In any case, make your rejection immediate and unequivocal.

When negotiating in a collaborative style, you might reduce how demonstrative you make your rejections. Perhaps indicate which part of their proposals you liked (if any exist). Incorporate those parts into your next proposal. ("I like where you're going on payment terms. I tell you what...")

In a creative style, you might prepare to show enthusiasm around areas of overlapping synergies. In areas where you are being creative, you might be more transparent about the opportunities and pitfalls for both parties. Most importantly, stay focused on building value for both parties where there was less value before. Let this focus show up in your immediate responses.
